Tidewoven explores the historical and cultural relevance of seaweed in Cornwall tracing its journey through generations from discarded bycatch to a valued sustainable resource. Despite the rest of the world having a rich documented history of seaweed culinary recipes, there are few records in Cornwall. Historically, Cornish fishermen cast seaweed aside while fishing for lobsters and other marine market produce. No one wanted to eat seaweeds. However today, this resource is being rediscovered through sustainable harvesting for culinary use and environmental practices. Through imagery, the project reflects on seaweed’s past absence, its emerging role in Cornwall’s food culture and its potential future as a resilient, climate friendly, alternative for nourishment in the wake of the climate crisis.
